Self-delusion is the act of deceiving one’s self. (noun)

An example of self-delusion is a person who believes himself to be much smarter than he actually is.

In my line of work self-delusion is so common, one could suspect that it is our nature to lie to ourselves then pretend that we didn’t know it.
